I've noticed a few coins Heritage is selling on ebay have the PL or DMPL designation. In looking at these coins I don't see anything special about them.

For example, this coin: http://cgi.ebay.com/1885-O-1-Morgan...mZ8395872362

I started looking at some of my slabbed coins and noticed a few that I think look more like DMPL than the Heritage coins.

Why did the Heritage coin get a DMPL designation? Why wouldn't a coin like mine below get the same? The devices are very frosty, contrasting with mirrorlike fields.

(Sorry about the bad pic. Bad lighting.)

keh, prooflike and deep mirror proofline or cameo coins are very difficult to image. The mirror-like reflections which are often found in early-strike Morgans just don't photograph very easily and Heritage's images are notoriously poor for this factor (among others). It's almost a value judgement whether or not a Morgan is PL or DMPL or somewhere in between. It's virtually impossible to compare a coin in hand with an image to determine if a coin has prooflike qualities; certainly with ANACS, if they had thought it was PL quality, it would have so stated. Here's one reference for making this determination, but it requires the coin be held in hand: http://www.coingrading.com/plcoins1.html

While the top TPGs may grade and slab a coin as having PL or DMPL qualities and thus add a certain amount of value, I would not want to rely on someone's say-so nor image on an ebay auction for such a coin in the raw.
