My father left me a leather pouch of heavy old totally black smooth coins. I don't know what they are or if I should clean them with something to find out? I know virtually nothing about coins but am very interested in it becoming a hobby. Can anyone offer any advice? Thanks, new member Doug

Hi Doug

Welcome to the forum !!

First off dont clean them no matter how tempting !!

Can you post pics of the coins ?

Can you read anything on them ?

can you make out any type of design detail ?

Lots of folks here with a vast amount of knowledge , we just need a little more info .

It might be a British cartwheel if he says it's big. :)

I second Rick's though that until you know what you have don't clean the coins. You could destroy most of the value you might have.

yes a picture or scan with another coin beside it for size comparison would help.
Big black coins...Umm..hard to guess.
But copper tones black, and the old pennies were large.
I have seen Black on silver also.
