I've never had a coin slabbed before so I don't know the procedure. I've got 2 nice ones (roll finds actually) that I'd like to get slabbed for preservation and easier saleability should I so choose. Do I go to a dealer or can I submit directly to one of the TPGs? I was thinking NGC. How much does it cost?

All depends on how you want it labeled. Also what kind of coin it is.

Just look at each of the sites for the grading companies.

They each have a PDF format you download and fill out, then send it along with your coins.

Much cheaper to do in lots of 20.

Costs between 8.00-50.00 per coin depending on volume, coin value, and how you want it labeled.

NGC & PCGS require memberships for direct submissions. ANACS & ICG do not. Working through a dealer is a good idea as they can confirm whether or not the coin is worth submitting.

I would just stick the coins in airtites for now. In the future if you decide you want to sell any of them, you could get them slabbed at that time.

For example lets say you pulled a MS67 2008 nickel from a roll. Julys Coinvalues has it listed for $8(not that it couldn't sell for more or less). Let's say you know someone who will submit it for you through PCGS. The fee for submitting the coin is $14 + shipping to them, lets say you can get it to them for $6 insured + $17.60 postage and insurance back to you.

So now you have spent $37.60 for a coin that listed for $8.

This is just how I view it. In the end it is your decision.
Rest in Peace

I don't have any BUs. I can't even identify MS grades in the lofty numbers. I've got a 1999 WAM and a 1983 DDR, both in AU or better condition. I think those might be worth slabbing.

Definately worth slabbing. My dealer only charges me $25 per to slab, but that also includes bodybags. LOL You might consider trying out DGS (Dominion Grading Services), that way if they are cleaned or have problems, they still get slabbed. No membership required and they are becoming more respected by the day.

I agree with Thad. I've heard good things about DGS as well, but I have yet to try them. I like ANACS myself. The fees are reasonable, and they don't require you to pay to join a club to submit to them.
