I have an unusual coin that I was hoping someone could help me determine its value. It is a commemorative coin that has the words "The Eagle Has Landed" on the face with a space walking scene imprinted. At the bottom it writes, "July 20, 1969". The back of the coin states that "This medallion contains metal from the spacecrafts Columbia and Eagle, that resulted in the first landing on the moon."

Please assist me if you can. I am sure they are very rare.

That does not sound right, since the shuttle Columbia was not even built in 1969, and all the lunar landers that landed on the moon are still on the moon or in space.

The date on the front is commemorating the event, not the date the coin was made. I know the coin is authentic in what it states it is, just not sure of its rarity or value. The source my father received it from was NASA.
Rest in Peace

My first doubt is the fact that Eagle was left on the Moon. The lander base was left on the Moon, the Eagle Module was itself decoupled into a degrading orbit around the Moon.

So, floor trimmings from the manufacture? Big deal.

More knowledgeable people will be along shortly.

Welcome to the right place to ask such questions. I will probably learn more here, shortly. Right along with you.

ETA: Columbia was the command module.

Is the link below relevant? If so, your medallion contains metal actually flown, and carries pretty decent value to the right collector.

It sounds like a medallion that NASA contracted with a private mint to produce for the Apollo program crews as a commemoration of mission success. It is not a coin since it is not denominated and not produced by the US Mint. Since thousands of people worked on the Apollo program, it is quite likely that thousands of these medallions were produced. Of course,

I find it interesting that this post is on the 40th anniversary of the Moon Landing!
