Sounds like a place "Man vs Food" would go to, maybe he has done Charlie Parker's? Food Network show, for those who don't know. Somewhat entertaining. ( googling now... ) They taped an episode in Springfield a couple weeks ago, but *didn't* go to Charlie Parker's. ( edit to add link ) http://iggyz.com/?p=6090And to be on topic. I sure wish one of these coin releases was closer to home for me.

Who was Charlie Parker ? I ask as there is/was quite a well known nightclub in Glasgow called Charlie Parkers..gotta be the same guy.
Steve199 , I sometimes catch that Man vs Food show if I'm flipping through channels,i didnt figure it would be something id watch but its oddly compelling. I have to admit I dont much care about anyone eating 16 chilli dogs but it takes the viewer to some pretty interesting places.
The fixation with binge eating and Habenaros is repetitive though.

Events planned in conjunction with release of new Lincoln pennyBy Staff Report THE STATE JOURNAL-REGISTER Posted Aug 09, 2009 @ 09:26 AM Last update Aug 10, 2009 @ 05:50 AM Several special events are planned Thursday in conjunction with issuance of the third 2009 commemorative Lincoln bicentennial penny. The penny, commemorating Lincoln's professional life in Illinois, will be released beginning at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Old Capitol State Historic Site. The penny depicts Lincoln at the Old Capitol. Other events at the Old Capitol will include: At 12:30 p.m., Chris Vallillo will present "Lincoln in Song," a program featuring new and period songs from his CD of the same name. At 2 p.m., Fritz Klein will portray Abraham Lincoln, presenting some of Lincoln's words and greeting visitors. At 3 p.m., penny designer Joel Iskowitz will present a program and answer questions. All three events will be in the Old Capitol's Hall of Representatives and are free and open to the public.

I spoke with Kay Smith today. She is with the Bicentennial Commission in Illinois. Ms Smith informed me that there will be a program / brochure available at the release, but there will be no rubber stamping available, like there was at the Indiana release.
She said the Mint made that request.
Also, she told me that the Mint contacted the Post Office and asked them not to post mark any rolls of coins brought to them. They gave the reason of trying to remove the "commerciality" from the event.
Sounds to me like they don't want anyone but themselves making a profit off of these Lincoln Cents. With no big demand for stamped dated rolls, the mint thinks they can sell more of their own "special mint wrapped" roll sets.
Needless to say, I was upset to hear this news.
All in all, a very nice lady and an informative conversation.
For those attending, I'll see ya there.

Well now...there is a can of worms that's ready to explode. Asking the post office not to postmark the rolls...Hmmmmmm I'm sure if I asked one of the girls that work at the post office where My po box is to do it, I would have no problem whatsoever. Making a request like that will only increase the scalpers prices in the end. I say...good luck with that...tell me how it works.

Seems to me if your spending so much money on a trip to get these rolls at face you might as well just buy them at a premium and it would cost less than your trip!

Go to the US Mint web site and subscribe for the LP3 Lincoln pennies. That way, you do not to call in to the Mint to order. The ship them out automatically.

It would probably not have many attendees, IMO, the events at 12:30, 2:00and 3:00 will be events, that would be worth the trip and time, However most everyone will be in line waiting for the coins, and going back as many times as possible. I do not know why the events planned are scheduled for after the coin release is planned, as I saw in Indiana, 99.9% of attendees were there for the coins,I would venture to say the same is going to happen tomorrow, sad but true. Good luck to all who attend.

It was a really long day so I am just going to give a synopsis for now and I will have a detailed report tomorrow I estimate that at least 3,000 were present and the limit was six rolls per person. The available coins were Philly minted coins in the standard N.F. String & Son wrappers. I managed to get 24 rolls and on my fifth time around, I was ten people away from the tables when they ran out It was pretty obvious that some large commercial ventures were working the lines- I was seeing people in line with pre-postaged Priority Mail boxes, laptop computers, and evelopes containing larges quantities of $1 bills. Springfield police were diligent about people not conducting transactions on the Capitol grounds and I saw a few people escorted out Trading was allowable but any cash transaction could get you kicked out even though I saw no less than ten such transactions take place, there was just not enough park and police officers to monitor the whole area It turns out the the Post Office was doing a special cancellation but not onsite, the closest PO was a couple blocks from the Capitol. The lines for that were a complete debacle and I was not able to obtain any of the special cancellations. However, the postal clerks did make available the standard round red business stamp so I was able to get all of my rolls with that stamp.

I think its crap that only a handfull of people are allowed to buy these rolls at face while the rest have to pay a huge premium to get any at all.

I agree with NDS, this time I won't pay a premium. I learned my lesson last time! BD
