Again, I am aware that Morgans were not minted until 1878 that fact I'm not denying - it is not magnetic. Obviously it has been altered either through the minting process or former owners - unfortunately I cannot post a high resolution to the form, I suppose I will just have to walk into a dealer and see what they can find.

I thought that too however after comparing the "9" on other Morgans you can clearly see a line closing up the upper portion of the numberal 9 however on this coin there is void - I guess it is a call for an expert...

I know and I appreciate the responce...but seeing pictures are one thing placing it in your hand is another - The coin must have been minted 1890 or 1880 something happened to that third digit, which is why I love collecting circulated coins - you never know who or what the coins passed through to get to you.

Yep, it has been altered! I copied and pasted one of the pictures to my' PC, cropped, blew them up and did a little editing (mainly color) and you can see that some metal has been moved to build up the sides to make it appear as a "0" in the Date. See the pics below.

there is only 2 options here and one is its counterfeit and another is that its been tooled to make one digit look like another digit (there is no 3rd option) because there were no Morgans being minted in 1800 nor were they even test striking any Morgans at that time. Heck if I remember correctly the Morgan design hadn't even been drawn that early (I think George Morgan drew the design either in the late 60's or early 70's) so there would be no way for a coin to leave the mint with that date since they wouldn't even know what the Morgan was going to look like in that time

I want to be clear that this has been sitting in a sock drawer for nearly 50+ years any tooling was done prior to me handling it - I knew that they weren't minting the Morgans until 1878 which is why I thought it was, a mistake/misstrike, tampered with or a counterfeit coin - this ultimately brought me to this forum to see if anyone had ideas or have heard of misstrikes of this nature. Thanks for your help.

I would call this nothing more than an altered date. Someone took it upon themselves for whatever reason and altered the date. I am afraid your coin is nothing more than a curiosity piece.

It looks like it could have started out as a 1890 with damage to the 9.

This looks to me like a random event of post-mint damage to an 1890 Morgan. There's no logical reason to alter one to a date 75 years before the design first appeared, and whatever hit the 9 also damaged the field and the 0. This wouldn't have happened had it been deliberately tooled.
