The reason why the third Date digit got changed, is really only semantics! I believe that it is an altered digit because the flat surface (technically the fields of the coin) within the digit is clear with no evidence of a loop from a "9" or other digit. Others believe that it is a damaged digit but it really doesn't matter. The coin is not an 1800-O Morgan! It could have been damaged or altered at any time between it's minting and coming into the OP's family's possession.

Dave is correct on his assessment. There is a definate valley between the lower loop of the 9 and the upper loop. The open space inside is caused by metal movement from the blow it suffered.
