My apologies to fans of The Tick

How often are coins made into spoons like this, and is there any way to tell when they were made (modern as opposed to contemporary)?

Spoooooon!

thanks!

You mean to tell when it was actually deformed? Depending on the type of coin and the amount of cupping sometimes there are sort of stretchmarks that can happen.

These stretchmarkes will be fresh and bright until they retone to the rest of the coin. Depending on the content of the coin is how these marks show. Even that is reaching a bit.

unfortunatley that is really little to go on so most are just shot from the hip and called good enough.

Any wear patterns worn into it by any chance?

You can look at the way it was made too for HOW it was made. What torch or kind of brazing can at least SOMETIMES tell you an era.

Acidic, I'll try to post some more pics of the other side and the handle. The handle is twisted and looks like the same color as the coin. It is *very* cool, for some reason I really like it. It's one of a set of 6.

RFB, yes, that's what I meant. Maybe with some decent pictures of the handle, coin, and where it's attached it will give a better idea of when it was made.

be back with better pics..

99% chance that is a repro.

I believe that the coin should have been silver.

Treashunt.. I thought they were supposed to be silver, too, but they look like pretty good repros if they are.. of course, I'm not an expert on these.

Here's more pictures. Sorry about the (lack of) quality, I only had my camera phone for these. I can try after I get home with the regular camera rig.

It is suppose to be a silver 1/6 thaler (Vicariat issue) 1763 FWoF Saxony/German States. But by the looks of it coin is not authentic (I'm not an expert on this) hair has to have more curls based on my photos. But these teaspoons are definetely not modern made based on workmanship and box. I don't think it is comtemporary either.
