Has there ever been an incident where someone managed to fool the TPG's.
Sent in counterfeit and got back positive results.
Or are the TPG's THAT good.

Just simple curiosity.

Of course the TPGs aren't omnisciently perfect. Swamperbob I believe has a couple of counterfeits slabbed by TPGs as genuine (and we're talking top tier in genuine slabs, not basement graders or fake slabs).

It's by no means normal or common, but it's certainly not impossible.

yes as a matter of fact there was some (if I am not mistaken) small O morgans or micro O's in some specific dates of the Morgan (1896, 1900 and 1902)that PCGS had graded quite a few of and then started buying them back because they were all deemed counterfeit. here is one in the PCGS slab still http://cgi.ebay.com/1896-O-Morgan-D...AM_W0QQitemZ220267327059QQcmdZViewItemQQptZCoins_US_Individual?hash=item3348f4ae53&_trksid=p3286.m20.l1116

"Officially" PCGS authenticated 95 of the Micro O dollars. I say officially because they did not start noting the designation Micro O until 1998. In the twelve years before that there is no way to know how many of them were slabbed without the designation. But if they were slabbed at the same rate before and after that would mean another 163 of them.

And there have been other fakes slabbed as well. Still overall the number of fakes that slip through is a VERY tiny number.

I have never seen any of these micro o coins except in photos but would really like to have one if they are good enough to fool everyone for some many years. Conder, how did they finally find out these were fakes? I am guessing this is one http://cgi.ebay.com/1902-O-Morgan-D...-O_W0QQitemZ190324821488QQcmdZViewItemQQptZCoins_US_Individual?hash=item2c503e4df0&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14 and this is another http://cgi.ebay.com/1896-O-Morgan-D...-O_W0QQitemZ190324839327QQcmdZViewItemQQptZCoins_US_Individual?hash=item2c503e939f&_trksid=p3286.m20.l1116
