I was wondering if anyone has slabbed through ICG, and if so, what do they think? I've been using ANACS up to now, but ICG has a great membership deal going, and I'm considering giving them a shot. I've thought about NGC as well, but I really don't like that you have to pay at least $50 to join their club to submit coins to them, so they're really third on my list. But any ICG opinions would be quite helpful!

Although I haven't submitted coins to ICG myself, I own several coins slabbed by ICG. I really like their slab design and feel it is more appealing than those offered by other TPG. ICG grading is considered more liberal than PCGS/NGC. The consensus of opinion seems to place ANACS/ICG one step below PCGS/NGC and I tend to agree. ICG coins I've obtained have been at a substantial discount over a like graded PCGS coin. For pre-'33 gold below MS, ICG is a good choice for authentification. In short - I like them but I stick with PCGS if considering re-sale value.

Thanks bherring for that opinion. I may still give ICG a try, I'm weighing it out between them, ANACS and NGC. I won't use PCGS though, I know a lot of people like them and consider them to be the best, I don't like a lot things about how they do business, namely the collector's club again. I know NGC has one too, but I believe NGC's membership fee is lower. I'm still torn, I'll wait and see what else anyone has to say :)

I agree pretty much with what bherring1964 told you. Are you a ANA member? if so you can submit coins to NGC and NCS as a ANA member. If you are not a member then It will cost you 35.00 to join and then you can send coins in to be graded plus you get a real cool monthly issue of The Numismatist for 12 months and that alone is worth the 35 bucks.

Actually Norseman, I'm not, but I think I'm going to sign up. Submission privileges to NGC and a 12 month Numismatist subscription is totally worth $35! Thanks!

If you care to give NGC a go, you can submit directly to them without a membership fee by way of ebay, if they are continuing this offer. For more information, please follow the link. http://www.ngccoin.com/ebay_ngcvalue.cfm

For what it's worth, ICG seems to be pretty close to PCGS as far as grading of "classic" US coins goes. My 1878-CC quarter, 1875 Shield nickel, and 1838 $5 gold piece all crossed over from ICG to PCGS recently, at the same grade. ICG clearly becomes too easy for modern MS and proof coins. They give out MS70 and PR70 DCAM grades much more frequently than PCGS. One caveat: PCGS may be pickier when it comes to detecting problem coins. I attempted to cross over my 1800 Half Dime from ICG to PCGS. The ICG grade was VF-30 and I noted on the submission form that I would accept a minimum VF-20 grade from PCGS. However, PCGS would not slab my coin because they detected the dreaded "altered surface". I'm still not convinced there is a surface problem, but in this case PCGS found issues with a coin that ICG had judged to be OK. For the more expensive coins in my collection I prefer PCGS.

I use ICG with my VAM coins. They currently have a 2-day, $12 grading deal for any US dollar up to $500 value, with attribution ( VAM) for $5. SO $17 each. Also if you social engineer with the person there, you can get the dealer prices for the other services. For a year, I got a coupon to grade any "special key" such as 1877IHC, etc.( they have a list) free with another paid submission. Jim

I concur with bherring1964, and, although I have no direct knowledge of them, DGS is supposed to be a rising contender as a TPG. Something that may be worth looking into.

Quote: Submission privileges to NGC and a 12 month Numismatist subscription is totally worth $35! Thanks! In case you haven't been pushed over the edge yet, ANA membership also includes library privileges. You can search the titles online, and then are just a phone call away from them mailing them to you for a few weeks. Pretty cool.
