Repunching of dates went out in the 1800s, you will not find a 20th century coin that had a date manually punched onto the die. It appears to be a couple of well placed contact marks.

I agree, contact marks. there are not repunched dates for the 20 century series. The over dates of these are just hubbed from to different years/different sizes of hubs.

appears to be foriegn matter encrusted under the "O". If you really want to find out what it is, do a 400-500x pic on the "O", that's about 5meg, then use contrast max high definition adjustments on it, if a shadowy line appears on the edges, then it's foriegn encrustment, as I think it is

1901/0-S half eagle. The last manually punched overdate and the only one from the 20th century. But manually punched dates lasted until 1907 to 1909. The Saint-Gaudens gold coins were the first ones to have the date as part of the galvano and master hub. Then the Pratt gold coins in 1908, and finally everything went over to hubs in 1909.

Well, 20th century series coins anyway, I was not quite sure about some of the carry-over issues. Thanks for the clarification Conder
