First attempt at deducing small v large dates
Top is small, bottom large?
What are the differences between the two?

You are correct. Besides the size of the date, note the difference in the shape of the two. Don't forget this coin was minted in both copper & zinc coated with copper. Four different varieties. The weight of the coin will tell you the difference between the two with the copper cent slightly heavier than the zinc coated.

True, the only one that does not have a copper twin is the small date Denver mint.

One of CCF memmbers has a great website for cent varieties: coppercoins. He had a project to determine what cents are still circulating and this site is still available:

Hope this helps. -- Terrell

Also the top loop of the eight is smaller than the bottom on the small date - like a snowman. The loops are the same size on the large date.

The easiest thing for me to notice on these is the distance of the date from the rim. The large date is really close to the rim.
