Hi, I recently bought a large lot of mainly 18th - 19th century coins that had a few ancients mixed in. Could anyone help me identify this one. It is around 25mm diameter,3 -4 mm thick. From my inital research the 4 dots on either side lead me to think it could possibly be a 1/3 litra or trias coin? Any further info wuld be much appreciated!

I'm by no means an ancient guy but lets see if my guess is correct. Greece?

Eagle?

Rotate the bottom pic 90 degrees clockwise and you'll see the prow of an ancient ship.

This coin is an early Roman copper piece. The four dots indicate this is a triens, or 1/3 of an as. Example on Wildwinds.

Thanks very much Sap, don't know why I saw an eagle there but glad I was looking in the right direction when I guessed a 'trias' coin. Any idea on value?

The millennium Sear lists dozens of varieties of this coin, but from what I can see this one's a plain unadorned type, with ROMA above and the four pellets below on the reverse. That makes it Sear 911, CV £40 in Fine (I'd grade this one slightly less than that, around VG). According to the catalogue, this is an earlier type, dating from around 211-206 BC.
