I have been all over the place with my collecting. Finally working on eagles and my first Dansco (proof franklins). I have 200-300 Susan B's and probably that many State Quarters. All are circulated, nothing special that I can see. I am thinking about cashing all of those in and purchasing more proof franklins or 2.5 indian. Is there any reason that I am missing about holding on to the Susan B's and states? What do you think. Thanks |

Get your hands on some older type coins especially key dates. Believe me, you can't go wrong. A 2.5 dollar Indian would be a wise investment. Buy a coin that has been graded by a reputable TPG such as PCGS or NGC. So many of these Indian's have been cleaned so beware. I stay away from modern coins (post 1965) just because their is far greater investment potential long term with the earlier key date types. swcoin.ecrater.com

Hold the fort, depending on the exact dates and mints, I'd be willing to pay a bit over face for some of that. I lived east of the Mississippi from 1970 to 2002. Then I moved West of the Mississippi. I have lots of P mint coins before 2002 and almost nothing but D mint since then.

I think I would cull the Susan B Anthonys first, my reason is that 3 of them that I know of are quite expensive to buy. They are the 1979 P Near Date ($25 - $30) in BU, the 1979 S Proof Variety II ($85 - $90) and the 1981 S Proof Variety II is going for ($190 - $200). I know you said all your coins were circulated but I would still check and see if you have any of them, even in circulated they should / could be worth a nice penny.
Just my opinion of course,

I agree with Mike, cull through your SBAs. Look for the dates he mentioned, and also keep an eye out for 1981 dated coins. They were only issued in Mint and Souvenir sets, and are worth a little over face. As for the State Quarters, check them over for errors, then cash them in. So many people jumped on that bandwagon and so many have been saved that it's doubtful they have any real investment potential. I also agree with yotie, that proof Frankiln set would be a great place to put that money. :) |

Personally I would cash in the modern coins you have and purchase the franklins, they hold no strong value and in my opinion never will. Far to many have been minted and so many are being saved that the potential for them to have value in the long run is slim to none. Proof Franklins on the other hand are only increasing in value and would be a wise investment. About the Susan B. Anthony's, check the dates on those. Any 1981's I would hold on to because they are significantly worth more than other years. Also check the philadelphia minted 79's because varieties exist for that year and mint mark. Good Luck!

Why not get an SBA dansco and build one set? Even if they are circulated it seems a shame to give them ALL up. |

Thanks for the help. I have finished searching the 520 SBA's. Everyone of them are 1979 and 480 of them are 1979P. There are about 25 D's and the rest S's. Now I am really confused. After your responses I had hoped to sell a bunch of them and buy franklins (I am working on my first Dansco). So, I am back to where I started-any further suggestions would be appreciated; I am really trying to learn and not make any more wrong moves. Thanks! |

Looked up near date, then looked thru them all again. I found 29 near dates (could be more, but 29 are clearly near dates). Are those the ones I need to keep? Also, looked up the 2 S varieties but I really cannot make out which mine are. Got a 10x loop that should be here tomorrow with some other supplies, so maybe I can tell the difference. Thanks.

As far as the S varieties, those are only found on the proof S mint coins in 1979 and 1981. If you just have business strikes, those won't be type 2's

My opinion is sell off the SBA's for whatever you can get for them and buy the Franklin's. But with being a Franklin collector I could be biased, LOL. Good luck in whatever you decide to do. |

Dkillet-I am working on my first Dansco, Franklins. Trying to stick with gem proofs and ms65 (havent gotten to the real expensive ones yet). Any good resources for purchases? I have bought a couple, cautiously, on ebay, some from my local dealer and some on the internet. Any suggestions welcomed. |
