Hi everyone, Sorry I'm new to the whole forum thing so I'm still learning. Ill post the collection here.

What I'm looking for is advise on how I should handle it.
I inherited this collection from my late grandfather about a year ago. He had them in "u do its" and some are still loose. I believe the ones he cared about most were put in "U do its"

I know he self graded these, but as far as them being "true" I'm not sure. Any help or advise on these would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Gang

Mike

He Has Pennies as well, starting from 1901 I believe. I find that they scan dark, so I didn't include them. But if anyone would like to see anything specific please let me know. its no problem to post a single high res scan of a coin. Any advise would be great folks.

I look forward to hearing from you

Its hard to tell from the images the grades of uncirculated coins. A very large image is needed or to have them in hand. You may consider sending in a few of the better graded ones to CCCS or ICCS and see how well your grandfather's grading compares with the professionals. That will give you some reference point with respect to the rest of the coins and their grades. As for the circulated coins, selling them on ebay is an option, either one at a time or in lots of several.

HI Mike

Looks like thats a nice collection. I would agree that you need a charlton, but you can also borrow one from your local library in the reference material section. They will most likely have this years edition.

We can obviously give an estimate of values from the grades we can see written on the 2x2s in your photos but without larger images of each coin we can not be sure that those are the appropriate grades so our value estimates may be off.

Also, there are a lot of different varieties that may be included in your coins that we would not be able to spot with small pictures.

If you have the time, try posting a few coins as a time in each post in larger images and then we can do a better job of helping you.

also, you could try looking at these sites as well.

http://www.coinoisseur.com/GradingCoins.html

Are you planning to start collecting yourself? Even if wishing to just get a sale value, it would be in your best interest to take your time and get as much info as possible on each coin so that you get a fair price when/if you sell.

we are glad to help you as much as we can here.

I will keep my eye on your post and do my best to give you a general value estimate in a little bit. It could take a while with all those coins.

Still could you possible start with say, the silver dollars and start a separate post with larger images in it? Maybe 4 coins per post or something like that and then we can see if the grades on the holder are mostly accurate?

glad to have you here :)

malissa

oh and by the way, the loose coins that are not in holders..... do not clean them in any way, and do your best to hold the coins only around the edge, a fingerprint may seem like no big deal but it will etch itself into the coin as time goes by and that lowers the value (and the beauty)

Welcome MClayton! Have you put any thought into purchasing some up to date referance material (i.e. Charleton's) and research the grading and variety(s) yourself. Continueing the legacy your Grand Father started in numismatics? Then the growing collection could be handed down to your heirs! A project of generations! Just a thought!

Thanks Gang.

Malissa , I also agree lol. I'm going to get my mitts on a charleton and take some time with each coin while I document it. I thought about sending a few off to be graded as well but I'm scared of losing the coins while shipping. In all absolute honesty, I figured id post the coins. If I received awesome feedback and had something of Great value, id consider selling it. but if its only a couple thousand in value, "if that". Ill keep doing what I'm doing and take coinsrfun's advise and continue on the legacy. Ill try to take some time as well and post individual lots, like you said. Large images and see what kind of feedback I get. :)

Thanks for the replies folks, I hope to get a few Up close Silver dollars on here by tonight.

Look forward to reading your comments

Hi mclayton Welcome aboard to the forum, You will find lots of info for your needs, and lots will benefit from your thread posts as well, You have inherited an assume collection thanks to Grandpa your very luck to have them. I have some info for you to make you rethink before you think of selling your collection for the price of nothing as what happened with many people from before.

The first silver dollar coin was issued in an experimental edition in 1911. Very few were made and even fewer survive. These rare coins from Canada are worth around $1 million Canadian.

Gold coins were only available from 1912 to 1914 and these are rare Canadian coins and prized collectors items.

The first Canadian error coin of the 20th century was a 1902 nickel featuring the new king, Edward VII. It featured the St. Edward's Crown which he did not, in fact, use for his coronation. These are now prized among Canadian coin collectors.

In 1911, George V's new coinage did not include the abbreviation "Dei Gra" (by the grace of God) which caused so many popular objections that the coins were modified. As in the United States, the fifty cent coin is the least frequently minted so these so-called "Godless" fifty cent pieces are among the rarest Canadian coins.

After the death of George V in 1936, the Canadian Mint was waiting for new coin dies featuring George VI to arrive, but faced with a shortage of coins going into the new year, they had to produce some very fast, and they did but they modified the 1936 die with a small dot to indicate that it was actually printed in 1937, and minted just a handful of them, less than one hundred in the case of pennies and nickels.

After India and Pakistan achieved independence, the imperial title was removed from George VI's official coinage but again, the dies were late arriving in Canada, so the Mint resorted to the same tactic, this time adding a small maple leaf to indicate that the coin was marked 1947 but minted in 1948.

Hi gang, I'm thinking I'm going to take Malissa's advise and slowly take my time with this lot. It could prove more Valuable later.

I scanned in the First four silver dollars. Any advise on Grade or condition or value would be awesome. :)

I will slowly keep adding small lots, high res to this thread. Thanks again for any help

Mike
