Kevin,

All VAM 163's have the broken 'R'. That's the main diagnostic for the group 160~189.

If you want to put money in the bank, find a VAM 123 and VAM 166. These are the two keys of the 7TF VAMs.

The broken R makes this a B2c reverse and is used in the section of vams numbered 160 thru 189, when you look at the obverses then the shifted U tells you that its the 163. When you identify the reverse first, it limits the number of obverses you have to look at. Trying to do the obverse first makes it a long and often wrong attribution because you often tend to focus on the wrong things. In this particular case the reverse is telling you not to bother with numbers 100-159 and 190-199. Leroy has a "1878 P 7TF Morgan dollar Attribution Guide" that deals with the B1, B2 and the C reverses that is really helpful.
