Unfortunately, some of my collection focus has been affected by the thought of the existence of counterfeits. I would be afraid to buy a Trade dollar or some of the pricier type coins or key dates in fear that I will be ripped off.

I find myself drawn to finishing a collection in silver Roosevelt's and franklin's because I don't think the east would waste time making counterfeits of these.

So now, for the same reasons above I find myself starting to pick up a few modern commemorative in mint packaging, because I think these are safe, until today. I search on ebay I find this listing from Korea selling a set of 4 "Young Collectors series" Atlanta Olympics clad halves with a starting bid of $0.99. It may be a legitimate listing for an original mint product, but how can you really tell? Do the commemorative issues have the same problem with counterfeits as the classics? How do I know that the east is not creating counterfeit mint packaging, if they are doing the same with TPG slabs?

Just wondering. I hate being paranoid, but in this world it seems you can't trust anyone.

Here is the listing in question:

well they look real to me but I dont do ebay and I would want to see some better pics of the coins and I would want to do some research on that packaging
and I would think modern commems w/ low mintage would be prime fodder for the counterfeiters

I have the same issue with you. Now I am only collecting certified coins. I hope someone could provide suggestions on this topic.

I would not worry too much about counterfeit modern commemoratives, not too many would be worth the effort of counterfeiting and even then it is doubtful that they would actually be composed of silver. Counterfeiters still have problems accurately replicating the mint finish and refined quality of a proof or uncirculated coin but it is much easier to fake a circulated coin through methods of artificial wearing and aging.

Thank you for the information, Biokemist6.

I had been collecting China lunar coins (fan and flower shaped) from the ebay sellers. (I am an Internet coin collector). Since there are so many reported counterfeits, I decided to stop buying non certified coins, including lunar coins.

I have a PCGS certified Trade dollar (1877S XF45) and a replica Trade dollar. If I don't consider the word "copy", I really cannot tell the difference between two coins.

Now I even buy the PCGS certified Lincoln Cent, Jefferson nickel, State Quarter (from L&C coins from ebay). PCGS slab and PCGS registry give me confidence.
