Well it appears it would be a privately struck gold coin if it is real. I don't know anything about these to offer any opinion on whether it is or not. The color looks a little funny for a gold coin, but I don't know if that means anything.
Rest in Peace

If this coin were real, it would be worth around $40,000. However, I am almost 100% it is not. It is listed in the RedBook as 1855 50 dollars Kellogg & Co. San Francisco, and is a privately struck California Gold coin(if genuine).

How much does it weigh?

Oh, and welcome to the forums!

There is a listing in RedBook for this issue from Wass, Molitor & Co that says a lot of these $50 pieces were made, but it doesn't list anything as far as diagnostics. The Kellogg pieces are much different and more expensice hehe

I think the weight would be 2x double eagles and an eagle, or 75.231 grms since these were supposed to circulate, and who would want to accept a underweight (and who'd want to make an overweight) coin?

Doesn't look like gold but I dont have the coin in front of me.

Looks like a 50 dollar token they made as souveniers in the 50s in San Fransisco for tourists.

If it is real however a 50 dollar California gold private mint is really something to be proud of. Hard to tell from the pics but it certainly doesn't look like gold from the photos.

I stand by the souvenier ID from about mid 1950's. Still a cool old coin but not much actual value.

Here's one you don't see very often, I would say without a doubt it's a copy of the Wass Molitor Co. $50 coin, probably made of brass.
