I sat down last night to roll up some cents from my junk bucket to return to the bank. At first glance I noticed a really shiny cent on top with an unusual pattern on it. Upon closer inspection, it turned out to be a 2009 D Log Cabin, which I haven't seen anywhere except in my mint sets.

It turns out my 10-year-old daughter had some change from when she went shopping with her mother this weekend and threw the cent in the first cent bucket she saw.

We took a look at the log cabin under the magnifier and put it in our Lincoln folder together. Now she's excited to "treasure hunt" for any unusual pennies.

I know it's not a major find, but I thought it was cool to find a beautiful example of a coin I was looking for in a place I least expected it. Shiny pennies must be lucky...if she had dropped it face up in the bucket, I may not have noticed it and rolled it up to go back to the bank.

That is so cool! I have found about a dollar and half of log cabins only Denver mints though, but I do have only one Philly mint that I found roll hunting. I am afraid of hoarding these but it is just hard not to do so because they are pretty scarce. Is it a bad idea to hoard these? Are the circulated log cabins in demand?

Why should you be afraid to horde them? Keep all that you like.

I'm definitely going to hoard all the bright 2009 cents I can get my hands on. Actually...I'm going to hoard all the 2009 cents, nickels and dimes I find just in case 2009 becomes a year of low circulation for the US mint.
