Obtained this last month, I cannot read what's on the plastic jacket. It shows Argentina football 1978 with Peso sign. Is this commemorative unc only or was the coin really circulated at that time? Thanks in advance

It blurs in the pic and my spanish is terrible but it says something to the effect:

Issued with special permission by the national bank. Blah blah blah available in three denomonations featuring three great collectible designs. Then it describes each design. blah blah blah for the world to see!

I am sure we will have others that can speak better spanish than I can but I gather it was special just to celebrate. Never actually in circulation.

Thanks, Its a little bit confusing, these are coins issued 1977 to commemorate a Future (football) event (that hasn't happened yet) 1978?
isn't it commemorative coins are for present and past events?

In Spanish coins this is common, (example, Expo 92, minted 1990) not sure about other countries. Commemorative coins are normally money making, especially those intended for visitors (tourist) so they need to mint it before the event to sell more. After the event people are gone and that means lesser buyers.

You can always commemorate in advance.

Commemorating such sports events in advance is common elsewhere too. For the Munich 1972 Olympics, Germany started issuing commems in 1970 (but simply put "1972" on all pieces , and the Football Championship (Germany 2006) series started in 2004.

Or think of the coins issued by the US Mint on the occasion of the Los Angeles 1984 Olympics (one in '83, two in '84), or the Atlanta 1996 Olympics and Paralympics (eight in '95, eight in '96). If you want to put "money making" a bit more nicely, you could say that such pieces were and are fundraisers ...

Isn't fundraising for a cause? Maybe the right word could be for business purposes. Laymans term moneymaking
