This is the obverse and reverse of a 1945 S Merc graded MS68. Do these photos show MS68 or do I need to take some new ones?

I would not have a hard time at all believing it is a 68! Nice coin!

Not only are these very nice shots, but the coin looks like it would be pretty hard to screw up, photographically.

I have to ask, though - are the marks I see directly above the eye and at 5:00 from it actually on the coin? If so, they're in a place which would jeopardize the grade.

Dave, I examined it closely with a loop and didn't see marks on it while I was at the shop, but I will have another look when I go in on Monday.

It would only cost $187.50 to see it in hand.

The coin has excellent luster and few if any contact marks. The few marks that are visible could be artifacts of the image pixelation rather than actual surface flaws. All I could say is it probably is at least MS-65 and could grade as high as MS-68. It all depends on how it looks in-hand. At least the full-bands status is clear from the photos: it doesn't make that standard due to the lack of separation in the central band pair.

If I were selling the coin I would post these images, plus a shot of the grading service holder showing the assigned MS-68 grade. That should be sufficient to satisfy any buyer contemplating an online purchase.

I can't say MS-68 or not cause I tend to lean toward caution and under grade a little. But I can say it is one of the most stunning Mercs I have ever seen, and I too would love to see it in hand.

This is a beautiful coin , I also see the marks dave has described and agreethat they are in focal areas and would likely make the coin a 66 if they are in fact on the coin .

I've seen photos with questionable marks before but then found that the "mark" was actually the lighting on the coin. If the marks are not on the coin, you should take new photos with the lighting adjusted differently.
