I can't make out the inscription on the reverse. Could it be something to do with the centenary of the Declaration of Independence, Philadelphia 1776?

navcomm.. welcome to the forums.

If you like, you can post larger pictures on something like Photo Bucket (www.photobucket.com - you'll need to create an account there) then post the link here that they give you after uploading your picture. That way you can post more detailed photos.

You have a Washington Medal -- Baker 426. It is known as the Danish medal from the Centennial International Exhibition of 1876 (in Philadelphia). (It is the work of Danish diesinkers and medalists who prepared the pieces in the United States.) MDCCLXXVI./FIRST IN WAR, FIRST IN PEACE, FIRST IN THE HEARTS OF HIS COUNTRYMEN. On the reverse, is an allegorical group of five females -- America with Libery cap at center presenting wreaths to Arts and Mechanics on left and Commerce and Agriculture on the right. At the base of the design is H. OHLRIK INV. F. SCHMAHLFELD FEC. In exergue: PHILADELPHIA 1876/V. CHRISTESEN. These medals were made in Silver ($1750 in proof), Bronze ($250 in proof) and White Metal ($250 in proof). The medal is 53mm. Plain Edge. In Silver there about 6 known. In Bronze and White Metal, the rarity level is R4.
