Well it is or at least is supposed to look like a Japan 100 Mon coin (1835-1870). However, it's unusual for it to be of that color. Or are the colors wrong in the photo?

The scanner doesn't reproduce colors very well. It's brass, a medium-bright gold tone.

Could well be real, then.

If I remember correctly, it should have flower-shaped marks on the edge. Two (I believe). Check and see if they're there.

WpgLwr, you just dated yourself! An Olde Pharte like me. DL20K, just voids and file marks on the edge. I think it's probably a replica.

This coin looks like it was plated it's supposed to be bronze. I see what looks like one of the validation marks on the lower right I don't see the other on the left but it could have worn off. I'm going to say it's OK.

I think (in my profound ignorance) that it *could* be a bright bronze; it's harder than normal brass, I think. I guess I need to bring it in to an expert.

I'd have to lean towards either a replica, or one that was heavily circulated or corroded, then cleaned.
