Has anyone (well I know you active dealers out there have...) noticed that while the 04 silver proof sets are still available from the mint for $37, the 04 clads sell for $60 and up on ebay? (avail from the mint for what $27 until recently)?
I know the answer is always supply and demand but the market can be temporarily irrational, as we all know. (see wisc errors, or the ebay auction where 5 identical half dollar rolls from the same seller went for 48-60 dollars- melt was 52 that day...)There are still going to be more clad sets than silver ones, today or in ten years, and more folks prefer the silver set, in general as demonstrated by the fact that the mint charges more for them. Who thinks the price differential will hold this way in 5 years? If you couldn't sell them for 10 years, which one would you rather have for free (unfortunately, I do not have them to give away...)

The Mint in a move to get ready for 2005 halted production on the 2004 proof sets very early compared to past years. A very high number of collectors/individuals who usually purchased clad proofs sets for Xmas gifts got BURNT as they sold out sometime in November and the MINT said no more this year! The price has risen steadily since that time. Will it hold? Don't know and don't care until such a time when I might want to sell one! I will care then, thats for sure! How long do you thing the 2001S silver set will bring $285? I think, for the most part, prices will remain very stable on the proof sets (1999-2008) until the Statehood Quarter series ends and then down they will come as everyone else will focus on something new that the Mint will be doing at that time. Out of mind and out of sight is NOT a good thing for the Mint or proof sets!

I also think that the prices will remain pretty steady until the statehood series ends, but I think that they will spike once it ends. Very rarely do Mint or Proof sets fluxuate in price. They steadily rise or fall until the market settles and then they pretty much stay at those levels. As far as which is better to own.

Greysheet bid:

Mint set $50.00 - $55.00
Proof set $57.00 - $61.00

Looks like both are safe bets to me.
