After we discussed the pr70 64 Lincoln, I went back to the coin shop today, I was hoping it was in a PCGS slab..but:( it was in an ICG slab. I went to the web site and thought there was a way to search by serial #. (I wrote it down) but there was not. I called ICG and asked the rep on the phone if there was a way to look it up on the web site. He said there was not but if I gave it to him he could look it up. I gave him the serial # (3688880301) and it came back as a pr70 1964 Lincoln.. So I asked the next question.

If there is only a population of 10 according to the reports from PCGS and it would be a few hundred $$. Then why would it only be $29.00 ( he took $10.00) off if I wanted it. fron ICG?....the phone got very, very quiet and then he said "we tend to be a little more liberal on the modern stuff than PCGS" but if I wanted to call back on Monday the person that could help me is at a coin show. THank you for the advice on this.. I would have kicked myself pretty hard. I'm so glad I took the time to get a little education instead of "impulse buying".

Grovey,

ICG is certainly one of the top 4 services out there and very highly recommended. However, on the modern coins they do tend to be a little (and I stress little) off the mark. However, one point can make the difference of thousands of dollars sometimes. Just be careful out there. Use the service which is best suited for the coin, not what anyone else thinks. I use NGC and PCGS with the exception of variety coins and I pick which service based solely on which is better for that particular coin. Hope that helps.

I agree with ND...ICG gets a bad rap for coins graded 67 or higher, but for circulated coins, they (in my experience)are very conservative. PR69 and PR70 1964 Lincolns are pretty common in all grading circles. Now find a PR68 or higher 1970-S Lincoln in CAM or DCAM...now you are talking!

Also, I like to keep up with the services on Grey Sheets:

ICG is always up there with both PCGS and NGC. Also, ask for James Taylor when you call ICG. He has always responded to my questions concerning the same issues you presented. BTW, take that PCGS PR70DCAM to a show, break it out (which I don't advise) or cover up the grade and PCGS themselves will probably grade their own coin PR69DCAM 9 out of 10 times.

If you want to contact ICG, here is their contact link. Ask the same question and let us know how it turned out:

I think ICG is alright...I don't list them too high on my list but I also don't get to look at many of their slabs so I guess I need to look at more before I can say for sure.

Glad you didn't get ripped on this coin!
