Hi guys, here is a Melbourne Centenary Florin I bought at the Sydney coin show on the weekend. Just wondering what you guys think of it and what grade it might be?
Thanks
Bryan

Fingerprints on both sides?

Apart from those, and the little bagmark next to the king's ear, it looks excellent. I'd call it Unc, aUnc at worst.

I would grade it Unc. Pity about the fingerprints, I hope they knocked a few dollars off for you because of them.

Good news! sort of, the coin was in a cardboard holder so I removed it from the holder and the fingerprints were on it not the coin. By the way I paid $500.00 for the coin, was that a good price?

There's something wrong with it (I'd guess hairlines scratches, possibly caused by cleaning). Note the defined boundary between the exposed fields and the devices/legends. Try looking at the fields closely with a strong, focused light (cold cathode or bright LED's work well though sunlight works best but is difficult to focus). Make sure there isn't much ambient lighting. Look for fine hairlines, if parallel it's been cleaned, otherwise just contact hairlines.

Note though, most MC florins have die polishing striations which are raised lines similar to what I'm talking about. To disambiguate, check if they go through and under the legends, if so then they're die polishing striations, if they break at the legends they're not.

Even before noticing finger marks and small 'ding' behind king's ear(ouch!), it appeared that some even-ness had oddly gone missing(lifted?) from what otherwise seemed a nicely toned coin.

I'm far from expert... but wwww did terrific job drawing attention to the less obvious "There's something wrong with it..."

Nevertheless, still reckon your $500.00 was money well spent, bryan10au

Cheers,

I have been looking for one of these but I am rather wary of some ebay sellers who seem to have a lot to regularly sell. [Of course you can pick up a good copy for about $10 and a genuine one is worth $300+.]

Just noticed something strange.... A seller of a few of these says "I have inherited this coin from my late grandfather, I have a few very premium and rare coins I will be listed over November.". So far, so good.
However, checking his feedback shows eleven purchases of these coins, mostly from a no longer registered seller. Apparently his grandfather only left him very rare, high grade, high value coins....or, maybe he is just selling those and keeping the common coins. (I am a registered cynic or would be if anyone allowed such registration.)

I jump to two conclusions (circumstantial evidence only);
  • He has been ripped off and is trying to recover his losses by doing the same to others. Sort of like the "GOLDEN RULE" in reverse; I declare this shall be known as the "BRONZE DISEASE" rule.
  • ebay may have actually cancelled registration of a shonky coin seller

I hope my first assumption is wrong but would be pleased if my second assumption is correct.
What do you think?

Jeff

Nice coin. From talking to some dealers, the 2011 McDonald price guide for this coin is much higher than market. You definitely will get much cheaper price. In one auction, a GEM sold at $1350 comparing to Mc catalog $2250.
