Yesterday: My valiant attempt to put a roll of BU American Samoa-D Quarters into circulation ended a little earlier than I thought it would. The young cashier at McDonald's immediately noticed the Quarters and said "Wow, these are Samoa's!". He called his manager over to watch him buy them out of the drawer, and then he asked me if I had any more of them! Well now, I didn't feel like denying him a chance to get some extra Samoa's (since he was obviously a collector!), so I sold him the 13 Samoa-D Quarters that I had left. That and the 7 Quarters that I used to buy my coffee (that he bought out of the drawer) means that there are 20 less Samoa-D's circulating in Denver than I intended. Unless the other cashiers are sneakier and buy the Samoa's out of their drawers after I leave....

Ha! That's pretty funny. I got two Guams D's in Burger King change a couple of weeks ago. I guess the McDonald's employees are a little more coin savvy.
Thanks for your efforts of putting 2009 coinage into circulation.

I have had luck at Walmart buying rolls that way. They get tons of coins if you happen to know a cashier.

I wouldn't know if all McD cashiers are 'coin-savvy', but a few months ago I had a woman cashier who was born in Puerto Rico, and she was thrilled to find out that there were Puerto Rico Quarters (which she didn't know existed, prior to receiving mine), and I went back later and sold her a BU roll. This is the first time I've run into an obvious 'collector' cashier who made a big deal about his 'find' in my presence.

tornandfrayed75, when you get here, you can get them from the same place that I do: The Denver Mint Gift Shop. You are going to tour the Denver Mint, right?! You can get the 'currently minted' business strike "D" Quarters and Golden Dollars there, for face value. (Cash only!) Since I get them for face, why not put some into circulation? The James K. Polk Dollars should be there on Friday 8/21. The Polk Dollars and the Samoa Quarters should be the 'currently minted' coins when you visit. One thing interesting this year is that sometimes the 'currently minted' business strike Golden Dollars at the Gift Shop are the Native American dollars. From Jan. to Feb. 17th, it was Native American Dollars. Then there was three weeks between Harrison and Tyler where the Native Americans were again sold, as there was a mintage run of those between the Harrisons and Tylers. Quote: nickelsearcher: sooooo .... where are the 2009 Jeffersons? The Denver Mint employees said that the June/July runs of the 2009-D Nickels all went straight to the Federal Reserve.

The McD cashiers near me don't know what Ike's, SBA's, and 2 dollar bills are.

Yepper... Our Mint tour is at 9:00 am. Second trip to Denver in two months and second mint tour also. I didn't know about the ability to purchase rolls at face the first time around in June. What kind of wrappers are they in?
What about Lincoln Cents? I would love to pick up a box or two of D's while I'm out there.

Quote: What kind of wrappers are they in? No wrappers, sold 'loose' (they come from Mint bags), BYOCT's (Bring your own coin tubes!) or buy some coin tubes right there in the Gift Shop. I've seen some people put them into pre-formed paper rolls as well. For long-term storage, tubes are superior to paper rolls anyway. I could also roll them into paper rolls at home, if I ever wanted to... I do that sometimes, if the roll is going to someone else. I just got $50 of the James K. Polk 'D' Dollars and $50 more of the Samoa D's today. At home, I was able to pick out enough lower-MS Samoa's to make another $10 'roll' for spending purposes (the 'roll' is actually a coin tube, which is perfect for spending use, because the coin tube is infinitely re-usable.) Cents? Sorry, the only 'currently minted' business strikes sold there are the Quarters and the Dollars.

Quote:nds76 "The McD cashiers near me don't know what Ike's, SBA's, and 2 dollar bills are." Knowledge of those is generally age-dependent (the occasional young numismatist excepted). A 50-year old Wal-mart cashier might take your Ike's, SBA's, $2 notes and Clad JFK's without so much as batting an eye.... (or they might notice them, but not question their validity).

I started throwing no date Buffalo nickels back into the field. Haven't had one refused yet, though a cashier at the local mini mart said, "wow, I haven't seen one of these in a long time".

I have 3 branches of McD's trained to scoop up my Kennedy's. Sold rolls to some of the cashiers and managers. Got one of 'em reading up on those coins. She was telling me about "accented hair". Oh yeah, they don't mind me dumping Ikes on them either.
