Found this hitching post head (4 inches down) yesterday AM out in our back field. I've had it soaking in hot water/vinegar to help clean it off. The weight being about 3lbs and the diameter of the neck socket is just over 3 inches. It was cast apparently in two pieces with a rustic metal screw holding the parts together.

While rumors of there being a US Calvary outpost here (there's still shelter and water here) during the 1870s, stories are still mentioned. No-one had any real proof, hopefully until now. I'm making a trip to the SD Historical office in Pierre tomorrow.

Take Care

Definitely cool. Hope this is the first of many similar finds so that you can establish that there was indeed an outpost in your back yard.

When the excavation for the foundation for my new garage was dug up, the backhoe went through a burnt trash pit about two feet down, and I managed to salvage two bottles intact - so I know how excited you are over finding a real artifact, lol. Apparently my lot was once part of a barnyard for a farm house which stood on the next lot south of mine.

A way cool find. But you may want to read this before you take it to a Government entity of any type.

Thanks for the info, and I know that that finds on public lands are indeed open for (shall I say intense interpretation/scrutiny), but these, as are my Indian artifacts from Texas -- were all found on personal/privately owned property, with deeds in the safe.

Here are my arrowheads.

Also, heres is a picture of 1/2 of a Draft Horses collar/hames kinda like the ones used by the Budweiser Clydsdales I found a couple of years ago and made it into a walking cane.

Well, I just got back from the SD Archaeology office about two hours ago; I was there at 8:00 AM this morning to meet the representative. They referred me to the BHSU Archaeology Office up in SpearFish after showing them what I found. They did take some photo's, measurements, and weight along with my address. :( Alas...
