The 1943 P nickel is a War Nickel that contains 35% silver (and no nickel). Todays melt value is 84 cents with silver at $14.97 oz. Nickel and copper were needed for war efforts, that's why we had the 1943 Steel penny and "nickel free" silver nickels during part of 1942 thru 1945.
