I think I did better on this bunch. Cost me $14.50 for all 3. So here are the coins... 1938-P: (graded XF by seller)   1941-S: (graded VF by seller)   1944-D: (graded AU by seller)   Edited by macintoshse

Hmmm. That is a little better, but you still overpaid somewhat in my opinion and the AU coin looks dipped. Do you own a RedBook? 1938 XF-40 = $3.00 1941-s VF-20 = $1.60 1944-d net XF-40 = $2.00. It might be 4 or 5 dollars if problem free AU. This is max retail, as RedBook prices are high to begin with, especially with the economy the way it is. Unfortuantely, the coins you purchased would be worth $10 at best, probably more like $7 or $8. I would do some more research before purchasing if I were you. Keep at it though and stick around the forums! We all have made rookie purchases, and the forums are a great way to gain knowlege to make better purchases. Next time maybe post pictures before you buy so others can comment on the value. I do like the look of your 1938. :-) |

Some of the coins I have seen, shipping seems to be as much as they are worth.(don't get me started on the crappy pictures) I picked up some Roosevelt proof dimes for 2.00 each (I thought fair) I am quickly learning that if I buy anything from ebay, it will most likely be graded pcgs or ngc. That eliminates all guess work on my end. At least until I actually read the grading book that I have |

I too think you overpaid. I would suggest the above advice on getting a RedBook. You could buy one off ebay for less than $10. Then look up the listed price. Then take 20%-40% off that price and you should try to pay within that range. probably more towards 20% if it is slabbed (make sure is is PCGS, NGC, ANACS, or ICG) others are garage slabbers and are not respected by the numismatic community thus hold less numismatic value. Like it was said, stick around the forums, get a Red Book and do some research. you could even do completed listings searches to see what similar items have been selling for. |

Great photos by the way, keep them coming. Follow the advice here, get a reference book, it will be the best thing you can do. That way you are making an informed choice if you decide to pay a little extra for something. I have to admit, when it comes to lower priced coins, I am not really fussed if I am paying catalogue value from ebay if it is saving me travel time to get to a coin dealer. |

1938-P: VF30 worth $2 1941-S: VF20 worth $1 1944-D: AU55 worth $3 Definitely buy a RedBook and also a grading guide. If there are any local coin shops or shows you can get to by all means go. Just don't bring any money.  Study some coins and the grades assigned. You can also visit http://numismedia.com/fmv/fmv.shtml to get an idea of retail prices for problem-free U.S. coins. Good Luck! |

Thanks for all the advice guys. I will get a Red Book soon, and bherring1964, I did look at the NumisMedia site... Here's what I paid for every Merc I bought so far compared to the prices listed on NumisMedia... 1923-P: FMVP for a G-4 is $2.00, auction price: $3.25 ( really bad buy, see earlier post) 1936-D: FMVP for a F-12 is $2.00, auction price: $1.85 (seller of this one didn't have a grade, I considered it an F-12 coin, see photos below) 1938-P: FMVP for an XF-40 is $3.00, auction price: $4.99 1941-S: FMVP for a VF-20 is $1.00, auction price: $3.50 1944-D: FMVP for an AU is $2-$4, auction price: $6.00 1945-S: FMVP for a VG-8 is $1.00, auction price: $3.75 So, the above did state that I did overpay for most of these except the 1936-D, which was about right IMO. macintoshse you have a good attitude and that will go a long way. Keep reading and learning and don't buy any high value coins for a while. No raw 1916-D Merc!
