kevin,
The best resource out there is the VAMView price guide. The fine folks at VAMWorld and SSDC (Society of Silver Dollar Collectors) track sales for a six-month period and catalogue prices realized in the price guide ( ebay sales, Heritage, Teletrade, VAMQuest, and known private sales). Not all VAMs are listed, but all 1878's, Top 100's, Hot 50, and Hitlist 40 VAMs are included.
How do you get this you ask? As a member of SSDC (annual subscription) I get mine emailed to me automatically (PDF Format).
The guide is not foolproof (nothing is in pricing) but at least it puts you in the ballpark. If you have some specific VAMs in mind, list them and I can "ballpark" the value.
Once you get to 50 posts and an email link, this becomes much easier.
