Here's a new one: 1915 $10 Eagle.

Bought from Harlan J. Berk. Let's see what you all think and I'll tell you their grade.

Way to go Moe! I'm not sure what to grade this, because I can't tell from the pics how much luster remains. I'll hazard a SWAG and say AU-53, but it could be better or worse luster depending.

Its showing some ex-jewelry signs. The wear is quite minimal as johnny countdown said. Looks nice.

Johnny countdown? LOL! But yeah, I see what you are saying rusty. Obverse rim from 4oclock to 7oclock, there looks to be some kind of seam along the edge. very odd.

I don't believe it's an ex-jewelry. I don't see any reason to think that.

I think the extra gold on the 6 o'clock rim is just an excess from the initial stamping. The edge reeding appears to be totally intact and seems just some extra gold material on the rim.

I first thought it was rim damage and was very unhappy, but it doesn't look that way. It looks original issue. Like it came that way from the mint.

Thoughts?

I'm going to say AU-50, based on the wear that I see on the hair, and eagles wings.

I'm going with AU50. The reverse leans toward EF but the obverse is stronger.

Nice piece!

I'll go slightly conservative and say EF-45 based on the significant wear visible on the eagle's wing and leg. The surfaces look "flat" with no luster. If significant luster is actually present but not shown in the photos it could go AU-50.

I have seen other gold coins with characteristics similar to what shows along the obverse rim. The St. Gaudens eagles have raised stars along the edge (not reeding) and if those stars are intact then this coin probably has not been squeezed into a bezel. Also, ex-jewelry coins will usually have a lot more contact marks. I don't know what's going on with the excess metal below the date. Maybe that's the result of a rim impact?

I believe what you guys are seeing as ex jewelery characteristics is actually a small Cud on the Obverse. AS far as grade I don't do well with gold coins so I will leave that part up to others that are better at it than I, but if I had to take a guess at it I would say somewhere around EF-45 judging from the eagle as well. Coming from HJB if it has problems it would have been listed as such especially for an ex-jewelery piece. I have seen some coins they called lightly cleaned and I could see absolutely nothing that suggests any cleaning even under magnification so that is one place I am comfortable buying raw coins from from their descriptions even on coins I am not that familiar with
