A friend of mine found a really neat silver coin while using his metal detector. I've been googling for a while but am unable to find exact details. I believe it is a Spanish 8 Reales Cob that was minted in Mexico. I would really appreciate any additional information. It was found under water (close to the shore) in a lake not too far from Ottawa, Ontario. Any one able to help date it or provide any other additional information?

Thanks!

You are correct, it is an 8 reales Spanish Cob. The mintmark (small o over the M) on the obverse side, left of the shield tells us that it was minted in Mexico City. These Cobs were minted from 1572 until 1733 and your particular coin was minted between 1618-1634.

I know a few things about the elements included in this coin, for instance the cross on the back is a Florenzada cross and the 2 castles and lions represent the regions of Leon and Castile. The shield on the obverse of the coin is a Hapsburg Shield.

Thanks AmericanMuscle! I was having a hard time pin-pointing which Hapsburg king (or the year) would have been reigning while it was minted. Is there something unique about the shield that would tell you? Perhaps what looks like two fleur-de-lis on the right side of the shield (most I find on-line seem to have 5 fleur-de-lis in that same location). Do you think this cob was originally dated but no longer visible? Any idea what something like this be worth? Thanks again!

One last question: Does the Assayer mark look like an F and a D? Thanks again!

The coin looks totally fake to me. Details are wrong, the look is wrong. If you an post better, sharper pictures, maybe we can get a better look but at first glance, the coin is a fake.

I think it is fake as well
Better pics, size and weight will help confirm
The reason I feel is because a silver coin in the water
would be corroded or show some signs of physical abuse.

Yeah, I'm sorry to say that this looks like a tourist copy. It is possible for one of these to be lost and buried, after all. Who knows, maybe someone thought that it would be funny to bury fake treasure just to one day get a treasure hunter's hopes up.

Here is a pic of one I found at an elementary school while metal detecting. Looks almost exact. This one I know is a copy and yours looks like it.
