OK folks I picked up two more for the Bolivian collection today from the Bolivian Bonanza. Not as nice as the 8 Soles I got last week but got them at melt.
First a 4 Soles

4-Soles---Going-To-Bolivia 4-Soles---Going-To-Bolivia

The second is a Half Melgarejo. I picked this one up for the history if nothing else.

4-Soles---Going-To-Bolivia 4-Soles---Going-To-Bolivia

Did a little reading on Mariano Melgarejo and seems he wasn't the nicest guy in the world nor was he especially helpful to Bolivia as a nation. Here's a link to him on Wiki if anyone is interested.

Still may pick up a few more tidbits from this lot. Perhaps some of the Chilean or Brazilian. There was a nice 1916 Cugan Un Peso but my coworker snatched it up as he collects that stuff more than I and he gets first dibs due to seniority.

I'm good with that as he's built up an impressimve collection of World coins that were minted in the U.S.

A side jaunt for me but I do enjoy it from time to time.

clembo- Awesome! You can't argue with paying melt value. You did very well, especially on the 1/2 Melgarejo, which my Krause says is $20 in F and $30 in VF. Great buys!

So, out of curiosity, what has attracted to you these fascinating coins?

I work in a coin shop and a rather large hoard of Bolivian coins "walked in" the other day. Not our usual stuff for sure but I'm always up for different stuff if it's cheap enough.

We bought the collection in bulk basically. Too much to look through and much of it actually is junk silver.
I've been sifting through it and "blindly" cherrypicking coins that I find interesting.

I'm much more into U.S. coinage but buy the World coins for a few reasons.
First one is if I like the design.
Second is if I can get it cheap.

What can I say I'm an opportunist but the history behind such coins is always an added bonus.

clembo The price - MELT - is very close to legal theft but I know that is what most US dealers do with foreign collections.

Please prvail on the owner of the shop NOT to "junk" foreign silver. Perhaps you could make a deal with him to first post pictures of the junk coins on the forum and sell them to members here. Interests cover just about every country and everyone would benefit. He would get more than silver - collectors get access to cheaper coins and no coins get melted. The chance of a rarity being melted would be minimized.

I hate to see any real coins melted.

Once melted they are gone forever.

Swamperbob,

Believe my I know how you feel. He often offers stuff to customers very close to spot and they refuse. It builds up and after 42 years the shop is beyond cluttered.

We did manage to sell a lot of the holed stuff today at a modest markup.

I'd love to buy all of this stuff but my budget doesn't allow it. Perhaps I'll try a small batch here and see what happens. Perhaps I could consign some as well. I'll talk to him about it Thursday.
