It would be hard to argue that any circulation strike Jefferson's are 'rare' in the traditional sense of the word. The mintage figures are just too big for every coin in the series.
That said ..... for those of us (like me) who aspire to put together a complete circulation strike collection ...... there are nine (9) coins in the series with mintage below 10 million that are ... well ... not 'rare' but 'hard' to find.
I call these 9 'special Jefferson's' ..... and through 81,200 coins I had found 7 total (1 every 290 rolls on average).
Roll # 4 tonight of my latest $20 search had 2 'specials' in the same roll!
A very beautiful XF 1939-S.
A somewhat worn but still F+ 1951-S
Alas ..... I already had bagged both of these.
Anybody want to trade for a 1938-P!
Finds like this keep me fired up to keep on searching
I have a 1938 that I found a couple of weeks ago. It is at least an Extra Fine. Has a beautiful tone to it also. I would love to trade it to you for that 39-s. I will post pics soon.
