Just passed 80,000 nickels searched (2,000 rolls). I'm hot on the heels of CND.

Here are my find rate statistics for benefit of the kindred-spirit nickel searchers out there. Remember ..... I keep 1959 and earlier coins.

Overall find rate is 1.261% ..... 1 coin/1.98 rolls
War Silver is 1/111 rolls (found 18)
Buffalo is 1/250 rolls (found 8)
Liberty "V" is 1/2000 rolls (found 1)
"Special" Jefferson's is 1/286 rolls (found 7)

My MS-Excel algorithm is set up to calculate circulation obsolescence in this series ...... here are the current 80,000 coin data ...

Overall ..... 81.5% of pre-1960 Jefferson's have been lost from circulation for whatever reason.

1930's obsolescence is 86.5%
Pre-War 1940's obsolescence is 81.2%
War Silver obsolescence is a staggering 98.6%
Post-War 1940's obsolescence is 77.9%
Early 1950's obsolescence is 72.3%
Late 1950's obsolescence is 69.6%

Status of my Quest to find the circulation strike Jefferson's from rolls ......

Still need 7 coins (same as where I was at 70,000 searched ) ..... 1938, 1938-D, 1938-S, 1942-S, 1943-D, 1944-D and 1950-D

I have to suppose that CND and -22- and hockingzig have stole all the 1938-P and there are none left for me.

Best

David

Actually pulled a 1943D in the two boxes I opened today. Almost 11,000 rolls and only two of those found!

You got to 2000 rolls pretty quick; you might catch up!

Congratulations on 2000 rolls searched nickelsearcher! About your lack of finding a 1938-P... I'm currently only at 750 rolls (I starting searching only about 2 weeks ago) and I've only found one 38P so I haven't "stole" too many of them from you

Goodluck on finding one! And I will definitely post my results when I reach the 1000 roll mark

i cheated for my 1943d, I still found it from circulation but pulled it out of a coin machine bag when I used to work at a bank. I'm still missing 45d and 44d though. I think I have a quarter of a roll of 38p's now, most of them from boxes that had 3 or more in each. I'm sure that will be your next hole filled.

I have a confession to make, my stats are not complete. I went to the bank a couple of weeks ago to get some nickel rolls and when the teller handed them to me one roll said"46,47,48,49" on it so I opened it and, sure enough it was all 46-49's. Of course I asked if she had any more of those rolls and she found 2 more rolls of all pre-1960's. I didn't include them in my statistics because I didn't want to skew the numbers that much. What do all of you think? Should I include them? I didn't want to mislead anyone into thinking pre-60's were that abundant so I left them out. Any thoughts?

I am reading this ... be assured. I am just speechless after the 6 rolls hockingzig got from the teller.
Interesting analysis nickelsearcher. Maybe you should be re-named nickelresearcher

Actually Wheezy it was only 3 rolls but at my search rate of one coin per 1.76 rolls(or something like that) those three rolls still make up for about 200+ rolls of searching. I was as astounded as you are, believe me.

hockingzig,

I'd count them!

I had the same thing happen twice during my survey, and I counted each instance. One of the rolls contained the only 1939d I've found to this point.

I just found a 38-P this week in circulation...not roll hunting. It was an upgrade for me as well. I also found the 38-D and 38-S in circulation within a 3 month spanof eachother last year.

Count those as 'finds' hockingzig ....... at the end of the day .. and enough rolls searched ..... it all evens out.

BTW .... great rolls! It has never happened to me .... but I can dream about it.

I'm curious to see your (and others) 'find rates'.

David
