Would like to get your opinions on this beauty. Love the die crack on the Obverse on Jefferson's coat at the bottom. One of my favorites, though I have many.

Another victim of the flash. Have to learn how to use the camera without turning that thing on.

Wow, I didn't notice it before but is that a small die crack I see across the U of TRUST?

Yeah that might be a die crack. If your camera has a Macro or Super Macro picture setting, try it out. That's what I use to photograph my coins.

I've looked at your beautiful nickel images so far Irish. Maybe try some natural light during the day at a window. I take my worst images using lighting inside. I have spent more time sorting coins than taking pictures of them. I figure when I am done keeping the best and get rid of the rest, I can work on my picture taking.
I think we both suffer from nickeltosis or Jeffersonitis though. It is great what has happened to our lowly, once snubbed, Jefferson nickels.

Thanks guys. Yeh, I need better lighting for sure. I did have it on macro and it takes great pics. Would like to get some lighting set up and turn that flash off. Will give that a try this weekend and see if I can get some better pics.

wheezy, it's kind of your fault, lol. I collected them on the side and seen many of your posts and I too started really liking them more and more. The more of them I get the more of them I want. I am even thinking of starting a second set after I get my first one done. So yes, I think I caught nickeltosis from you.

I'm trying to learn here ....

One reply says 'proof' ... another say 'MS' .... there is a huge difference in value ..... sooooooo ...

How do we know to tell for sure if an older Jefferson is Proof versus a well preserved MS coin?

David

The coin pictured could not be a proof first of all because it has the S mint mark. The proof for the 1942 silver TY 2 coin has a P mint mark.

Don't feel bad, I bought one and had asked what other thought, whether it was a proof or not.

A general rule, is that to identify a real proof coin,
( those less obvious before cameo proofs were easily found and commonly found in recent years )
is that identification is in the smooth surface and sharpness of the lettering and sharpness of the design and details.

A "proof like" coin could be similar in appearance, but under magnification some evidence of it being a business strike will probably be somewhat easily detected.

I suggest you get a hold of a 1959 - 1964 era proof set and examine the coins inside and study the quality.

Here is a link to my post I had wondered if I had gotten lucky on buying a 1942 TY 2 Proof nickel on ebay listed as a regular nice 1942 P business strike.

Looks to have everything in the right places, but that glare is somewhat of the impediment, again. Real nice-looking coin, though (whatever it grades).
