i recently came into possession of a stack of older Whitman folders for the 1 cent, 5 cent, 10 cent, 25 cent, and 50 cent coin series. while the bulk of the coins are circulated and show it, some of the coins are tougher dates in VF or XF condition.

I'm trying to decide if I should keep the folders intact or remove the better coins. I have multiple sets of folders for all denominations, so I'm not really worried about not having a complete set. as much as I would like to keep the folders intact (and work that went into putting them together) I'm concerned about keeping the tougher dates in their current condition.

any thoughts?

I would move the nicer ones and the tough dates into a Dansco and then replace with circulated and keep as a circulated set.

Are you talking about the old Whitman folders? If so put them into a better folder they will play hell on coins.

I agree, the old Witman folders tend to discolor and offer to much of the coin exposed to the paper and fingers. Those coins that are XF should be taken out and put into a better holder. Sometimes I swab coins with alchohol and then gently dry with a tissue prior to placing in another holder. This gets off some surface dirt and grime that may have accumulated from being in the folder.
