Just thought I'd share some pics. (Especially for the newer people starting to collect)

I was just dubbin around with Xylene and a qtip.

If you have the coin in hand the scratches don't show at all. The first pick is a scan at 400 dpi and the second was at 1200 dpi. Yes I rubbed it hard, but, was surprised at just how much damage was done. I never saw anything on the qtip, but marks were definitely made.

I'm also surprised on what the scanner picks up when you push the settings.

Good thing to be aware of. Especially for older coins, there is often grit or crystals of verdigris trapped around devices. It doesn't take much pressure to force these into the coin and leave a mark.

Were you wetting the q-tip and dabbin or did you dab while the coin was submerged in the zylene? just wondering?

The qtip was dunked in the xylene first and applied to the "dry" coin.

And this is why you should never rub anything on a coin, you will almost always create scratches
