What is with people paying like.....$30 for a cleaned G-4 coin? Was 90% of the mintage melted or something?

1913-S is a Barber semi-key, only 510,000 were minted so it is definitely a tougher coin.

Yeah, I always thought that this date was underrated mintage wise in comparison to the value of other Barber dime keys; leading me to think that this date was better preserved/hoarded in comparison.

You know what W.C. Feilds said?

$30 is way too high for a cleaned G04.

Yeah lol bherring, I agree totally and have tried so many times to win these even at book value with no success.

The 1897-S is similar I think, I see SO many junk coins going for good G-6 money and it took me quite awhile to snag a decent example without paying 2x 'book' value.

I do have to agree that $30 is too much for a cleaned G-4. I had a G-4 listed in my summer sales thread for $28- it only lasted a few hours. It is certainly not easy to come by though, the only one I have seen on my shop's bid board in three years is the one I bought and I just checked Ebay- only 5 auctions and 6 in stores- that sounds pretty tough to me.

Yeah, well the PCGS price guide lists it at $25 in g-4, so a cleaned g-4 certainly shouldnt go for $30. However, in general, it seems that coin is very under priced relative to mintage. It has the second lowest mintage, only marginally higher than the 1895-o which is around $400 in g-4. There are many other dimes that have a higher mintage than the 1913-s and are worth significantly more in all grades. I just assumed the 13-s had a much higher survival percentage, but Maybe it is just shooting up in value?

It is a good date, and that price is silly.

However, the 1913S dime has been the subject of much promotion over the years.
In fact, the former editor for Numismatic News' coin prices wrote about it nearly ever other month-- as he put together over a roll of them.

I started to pick them up back in 1999, and used to pay about $8 for a G-4.

I still grab no problem pieces.
