Can anyone explain the history of the 1919 Indian one rupee coin? Did it exist? I can't find out much about it, but I found one for sale that I'm positive is counterfeit. Even if this was a "normal" date it would still be fake. The sad thing is it is being sold on a military base in Iraq by the local jewelry shop for $40. It looks like it was made yesterday and is probably bullion silver. It is the same size, weighs about 11.5 grams (the guy weighed it to give me a price so obviously he is basing it on silver weight and not collectible value)

I need a little background on this coin so I can take to AAFES to get this removed from the store promptly. It is not marked copy or anything of course.

mmerc20- Are you referring to a 1 Rupee coin from one of the Princely States or one actually minted for the directly ruled territories of British India? There actually was a 1919 Rupee made for British India at both Calcutta and Bombay, both of which have very high mintages. Both are worth about $20 in BU, so I take it that mint Rupees are not that uncommon. The one your dealer is selling may be real.

Ok. I stand corrected. It is the British mint Rupee. When I tried to find something out about that date I saw the word "rare" next to it even on ebay auctions.

It is next to the few bullion coins the jewelry store here on base has and it is too shiny, clean, and perfect for it to be original. What's even worse is they want $40 for it. Either way, I am nearly positive it's fake. When I asked him what it was today, he said a "medallion someone had made".

Thanks a lot for the help.

Love those Indian One Rupees! Notice he heraldic Indian flowers at top and bottom and the English rose, Irish shamrock and Scottish thistle on the sides.

They're not rare, despite some ebay sellers' contentions that they are. If I had a nickle for every coin somebody on that site has called "rare"...well, you get the picture.

Very shiny examples of Indian rupees happen more often than you would think, for some reason unknown to me. I bid on a bunch on an ebay auction, and when they arrived they turned out to be more shiny than one would think typical for coins that were almost 70 years old. These were pretty much in AU condition.

Your jeweller doesn't have a clue about coins, it seems. I have seen this type of situation before.

Yes, it's overpriced at $40.00, and it's definitely not a "medallion", contrary to what he believes.

Quite truthfully, based on this alone, I wouldn't even bother with the guy.
