So how would you guys grade this one? The luster is nicer than appears in the scans. Thanks!

Frankies are tough because the features are inherently flat. I use the presence/absence of luster to make a call between AU/BU. It appears there is slight wear on the high points (eyebrow, cheek, and hair above and behind the ear). I have to make this assumption based on the difference in contrast at those points.

Looks AU55.

SeatedNut- Oh yes, these certainly are a tough coin to grade. I know that often the bell lines are used to determine grade, but if strike is weak, very little detail of these could be visible. Sorry that this scan is not the best. In real life the coin actually has rather nice luster.

So are Franklins not that popular due to the typical strike and resulting difficulty in grading them?

Actually they are very popular, just difficult to grade without a lot of experience. Their popularity with collectors is due to their available in all grades at somewhat reasonable prices ... and they contain 90% silver. It's a relatively easy series to collect all issues (including proofs). The only show stoppers for most are FBL early S-mints.

Of course these are hard to liquidate as a collection for these very reasons.

SeatedNut- Thanks for the info! So are the only real key-date coins the 1949 D & S?

I guess you could say that the 49-S is the key with 49-P, 49-D, and 52-S as the semi-keys. The 1950-53 proofs are very tough and quite expensive. Of course, an FBL is set a whole other animal...

AU-55, because of the wear on the lettering on the bell
