Hello,
A few years ago my grandparents gave me a small box of random world coins. Also included was a US siler trade unit. I can't find any information about this.

It is not a coin. It's a silver bullion piece alson known as a silver round. One Troy ounce of .999 pure silver. They are usually worth current value of silver. There are a few that are als oconsidered collectibles from what I understand but I don't know anything about that. I have about a dozen of them in differnt designs. The U.S. strategic silver stockpile may add some intrinsic value, may also just be hype don't know.

Yes, a private issue. These see little, if any, government oversight on such matters as purity and weight. The name brands (Engelhard, Sunshine Mining) are traded at stated weight/purity. I bought a few "off-brands" in the 80's during the silver frenzy. The name brands were not available. I learned the hard way about the weight issue. When I sold them a few years back they were all 10% under stated weight.

Nic, I think that they are all collectible as silver rounds only. I used to have a small collection of them. I think it is up to the person to decide which is more collectible to them as the majority of them are usually only worth the spot price of silver on that given day. I usually collected them by what the design was. I sold all of mine off to help purchase my house. I think you should collect the ones that appeal to you the most.

Their production was driven by supply and demand without regard to collector value. Most (myself included) consider them bullion coins and the value is directly tied to the silver market.

There may be a niche market, but it's not a very strong one. I would not recommend collecting them as a numismatic investment.
