I have some questions about mint marks.

1. When the San Francisco mint produced coinage for circulation, why were so few coins minted compared to Denver and Philly?

2. What was the reasoning for moving the mint marks from the reverse of the coins to the obverse?

3. Will we ever see "S" mint circulating coinage again? Why was circulating coins from San Francisco discontinued?

4. Why are some mint marks so small?

I found some information on mintmarks in the official Red Book of united states coin. The section talks about the size and the standardization of mintmarks. As to the San Francisco mint they produce most of the proof sets. Others might be able to give you other references.

Just a guess, but maybe because they were the primary proof mint?

Hi nds

1 If you take a look through your RedBook you will find that the production numbers shifted from mint to mint with some years Denver producing the lions share and others Philly and yet other years the San Fransisco was the only mint to produce certian coins, the 1933-S Walker as an example.

2 I dont believe Ive ever read an exact reasoning, but I do know that changes were madeto strengthen designs and streamline the minting process, perhaps it was just easier to punch the Mint mark on the obverse where there was more room, or maybe it was just a whim of the mint director to put his mark on production.

3 we have in the last 30 years seen a few circulating coins produced at the San Fransisco Mint, the Susan B comes to the fore front they also continued to produce circulation coins until 1974 when the new designation of the San Fransisco mint and their main duty is to produce Proof coins,,

4 The mint mark although an integral part of coin collecting is really nothing more than an accounting tool for the mint, there have been so many changes of the mint marks from small to what I see as overly large, shape, and definition changes are numerous.
