Yes, Dr William Sheldon described the die varieties for 1793-1814 Large Cents in his book titled Penny Whimsy, hence the S numbers. The R number would refer to the rarity with R1 being common and R8 unique or nearly unique. Sheldon's grading scale was the basis for today's 1-70 scale. The organization that caters to copper aficionados is Early American Coppers.

And there ARE members on this forum! Namely me for one, EAC #1947, been a member since 1982, I'm also the publisher of the early date census. EAC is not private, we are open to anyone. If you have a real interest in large cents, Half Cents, and to a lesser extent pre-federal copper EAC is a great organization. And now would be a great time to join. Every two years the club publishes a CD-ROM with all of the back issues of the club publication, Penny-Wise. It is free to the members. The next one comes out in 2010. Penny-Wise averages 60 pages per issue and comes out six times per year. Also included are all of the clubs annual sale catalogs, and there may be some other items as well. All told something like 20K pages of material. Not bad for annual dues of $25.

And Sheldon's 1-70 scale was not a grading scale it was a pricing scale.

Depending on the grade the coin may be hard to photograph. Artdio didn't say what the grade was, the comment about it being dateless may not mean much because the dates were often weak on the chain cents.
