Lincoln cents have not been composed of an alloy since 1982, they are currently copper plated zinc whereas an alloy is a homogeneous mixture of metals. The brass plating occurs when a few zinc planchets are left in the plating tank. They dissolve over time turning the pure copper plating into brass plating- zinc + copper= brass.
