Well I've started into the coins & currency of Costa Rica, in Tandem with my Costa rica stamp & postal history collection. Costa rica issued it's first stamps in 1863, so I have decided to collect the coins and currency 1863-date.

First the coins...
I've a binder with pages to hold 2" x 2" coins, 2" x 2"s and 38 coins, in 2" x 2"s. I've got them in order by denomination and date. Most are post 1940 coins, though I do have a cool 1866 50¢ silver coin.

I understand that Costa Rica will recall all their coinage in 2010 and issue a new set of coins. Like many countries, the metal value of the copper, brass, etc. is worth more than the coin face value.

My buddy, a coin collector, has the 2009 Krause World Coins (1901-2000) Catalogue, and printed off the Costa Rica pages for me. Now I just need the pages 1850-1900.

Now the notes...
I have a three-ringed binder with clear Vario pages with three ¢50 notes from the 1970's-1980's. I'm still plugging away, and hopefully I can get catalogue pages 1863-date for the notes.

If there's anything else I should know, please advise.

If anyone knows of any group that studies Costa Rica coins or notes, or any specialised catalogues, I'd be pleased to hear about them.

Many thanks!

David
