I believe they primarily grade on black water spots. I joined the HSN 2009 Lincoln program and I'm on my third set. So for, all of the coins have had some fairly significant hits on them, but they are fairly clean of water spots.

On this coin, there is a deep hit on the cheek area. Keep in mind this is an MS-67 coin:

On the reverse, there is a deep field hit.

Based on my experience of breaking open two "Professional Life" rolls, your coin is quite a bit nicer than anything I pulled out. Probably 40% were affected by a significant amount of spotting and another 20% or so had a reasonable amount of spotting but would not have graded over MS-62 due to various bag marks and scuffs- a few even had fingerprints I might have gotten a couple MS-66s out of 100 coins and probably a few more 65s but most of the keepers were MS-63/64.

Sure, poor Lincoln was wounded in a knife fight but it is 99+% spot-free which I have to believe is affecting the grading of these since the spots seem to be so endemic.

Do you think the LMC in the 2009 mints sets will be free of spots?

I doubt it since there is no special way of handling or production of the mint sets from regular circulated coins

The Mint Set coins will not be the same as the business strikes- they will be composed of the original bronze alloy(95Cu/3Zn/2Sn). However, that has created another problem which has delayed the release of the Mint Sets. The Mint has not worked with that particular alloy in a long time(pre-WWII) and they have been dealing with tarnishing issues and have been working on anti-tarnish treatments for the cents. Even if they were not in the bronze alloy, they would probably be of a better quality than the business strikes as have all satin finish Mint Set coins since 2005. They typically grade 2-3 points higher than the best business strikes due to different handling and striking techniques.

Badthad have you tried using your verdi-gone on the black spots to try to remove them? (Not this coin but others 09s).

coindexter - VERDI-GONE™ is not designed for such a purpose, it's only for the removal of verdigris from brown copper coins.
