I would grade it at VF-20 and it looks like O.108.

VF-20 looks about right.

But I'm thinking more of a O-105 versus 108. My reasons are the postion of the I in E PLURIBUS UNUM being to the left of the T in STATES and the double denticle over the last A of AMERICA.

Thoughts?

Moe, that was my second choice. I was going more on the raised one,and the dot on the neck. I didn't see a die crack through the 8, but I did notice what looked like one from the milling to the area above United. I actually missed the double segment above A3. O.108 does have that, but O.105 does. So O.105 it is. Not an easy task figuring out the different varieties even with the book. I expect to get better as I see more of these first hand.

Believe me I'm am NO expert on this stuff!

Just like you, Echizento, I just started trying to collect some of these. The more you look into them the more interesting they get!

(I've been getting most of my information from Coinzip.com. They have an extensive section on Capped Bust Halfs.)

I haven't been able to get my hands on the 3rd Edition of Overton's book. Any help from anyone?

I bought a copy of the 4th edition on e-bay from Stanton Books for $61. You can check with them.

I'd heard the 4th edition had lots of errors and the 3rd edition was better.

Any confirmation on this?
Rest in Peace

Interesting coin Moe. Lots of variation in the strike going on. Upper hair curls are strong, while the lower portion of the bust is very weak. This leads me to think it is a higher grade with a weaker strike. It may technically be more like a vf-30 details. With the weakness in strike and an old cleaning, I'd net it at an F-15 to VF-20. I'm far from a pro with these though.

That could very well be, I haven't seen a copy of the 3rd edition. Might be worthwhile finding one to compare.

I like O-105 for this one, and Net VF20.

It looks to be a bit better than borderline VF to me I would at least go VF-25. I'm no good with varieties. Would Like to learn as I love this series!
