I have a bag of aluminum coins and I am wondering if coins of this type can be worth anything. They just seem to be so cheap and light weight it is hard to believe they are worth looking through. Also most have no writing I can understand, which makes them hard to identify. Any thing to look for ?

They seem cheap but I wouldn´t reject any aluminium coin without knowing the real value. As an example:

Germany, Third Reich, 50 Reichspfennig 1944 G KM#96. In VF: 100$.

I don´t have the coin so there are no pics
I have KM#96, but it is the humble 1941 A.

I believe this is the most expensive piece of aluminium on the planet.

There are other rarities (such as the German coin Kreuzer mentioned, the Vichy France 1944 small C variety, the 1950 Hungary 10 filler, the 1908 East Africa ˝ cent, and so on) that can be definitely worth your while looking for. That being said, countries use aluminium in their coins because it's cheap and plentiful, so as a general rule most types of aluminium coins are cheap and plentiful.

SAP, thanks for that link: I read it.
Can't see any reference to a price paid, or even an estimate.
I acknowledge that plenty of collectors would pay above face value, but until it's in the market place, it's all speculative isn't it ?

It is always worth checking a coin out. My most valuable aluminum coin is a 1948 Hungarian 50 Filler that I pulled from a bulk lot. I remember having very low expectations when I searched Krause for a KM to put on the 2x2. I was pleasantly surprised to find that, even in good condition, this coin is still worth about $20-30.

Thanks for the help. I'll have to go through them and see what I can find.

There are probably more coins that have good values than those 4-5 listed above. I am not sure if you want to list them or take pictures. It would help since a member here can spot a coin that is worth more than face value.
